Walter Salles draws the viewer into the intimacy of this family and makes them accomplices, forcing them to care about the fate of each of them, creating three-dimensional, real, believable characters. Fernando Torres plays her life role, an almost Greek heroine marked by tragedy, with a delicacy that never falls into excess or caricature. The detailed set design, the sparse script, the natural interpretations, the hand-picked soundtrack, the precise editing, all contribute to the director being able to convey exactly what he intended. Since I knew the story, having read the book on which the film was made, as well as reports about it, my attention was focused on the cinematic solutions that the director used. He managed to transform this particular story into something universal, capable of communicating with audiences anywhere in the world.
