The first Indian film to receive the prestigious Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024

Tale

In Mumbai, nurse Prabha’s routine becomes problematic when she receives an unexpected gift from her ex-husband. Her younger roommate, Anu, tries in vain to find a place in the city to have intimacy with her lover. I really wanted to like this film after hearing so many positive reviews, however, it is not a masterpiece for me and is just another forgettable film that does nothing spectacular.

The third story is about an elderly lady who is thrown out of the house she lives in

The film is about a Malayalam nurse who works in Bombay and lives far from her husband, she shares a room with another nurse who has a boyfriend and both of them are struggling to find a place. To my dismay, the film indulges in clichés too much to the point of being completely predictable and boring. The protagonist yearns for connection, yet shuns it at many points, she is the film’s superego, silencing the desperate cries of others through dictation, but ultimately trying to imagine light in the darkness of her loneliness.

In this sense, her roommate is her antithesis, she has no inhibitions, she is in love with a Muslim boy and they are looking for a place to make love

You recognize the beaten path of a story of a subjugated woman, she is shown as very righteous, almost like a nun, in fact the film’s soundtrack is taken from a piece composed by an Ethiopian nun. In many ways, it reminded me of Ishiguro’s “Remains of the Day.” The story of the roommate and her lover didn’t add much to the story, apart from serving as a filler for the sex, I personally am not a big fan of nudity and out of place sex in movies, it is exploitative in nature and does nothing to move the story forward. The story of the old lady started as a social commentary on class and the hidden rules of society, at some point she wonders if she should face the reality of her existence or let herself be carried away by the illusion like everyone else.

This story goes nowhere and hence was disappointing

She ends up leaving the city for her hometown. Overall, the film doesn’t say anything new, it doesn’t punch you in the gut like Salaam Bombay, it doesn’t leave you gloomy like The Lunchbox, however, we can’t help but admire Payal Kapadia’s art. I’ve seen a lot of movies about Bombay, but nothing captures it like this movie, but it felt – especially in the second half of the movie – like she was trying really hard to make each story come together and find closure.

I’m not calling this a bad movie by any means, it’s slick and well-made, but it fails to say anything that hasn’t already been said through the movie
