Based on the graphic novel “Here” by Richard McGuire
Tale
A generational story about families and the special place they inhabit, sharing love, loss, laughter and life. It was first published as a strip in the comic book “Raw” in 1989 and was expanded into a 300-page graphic novel in 2014. Richard’s father at one point early in the film names several towns that he claims are along the Pennsylvania Turnpike, when in fact they are all towns that are along Interstate 80 in PA, which hadn’t even been built at the time.

Here is not a film for everyone

It tries something different, with a single, focused camera angle and a story that takes place over hundreds (or millions) of years. But that’s also part of the problem that keeps it from standing out.
It also takes a while to get going before we get to the meat of the story
We’re given little time with each plot point, with most scenes lasting anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes before jumping into the next scene. If it had been a little more focused on our core group of characters, the ending would have had a much bigger impact. There was also some rough-looking CGI, and the focus on placing characters very close to the camera for scenes felt a little forced.

It’s also a bit over the top in terms of how much stuff happens in a single space. In the end, Here’s an ambitious film that ultimately fails to deliver a fully satisfying story because it’s too concerned with showing everything that happened at that point and making the camera angle the main focal point of the story.
