The prologue begins with the player driving a Nissan Skyline R34 in Olympic City (although the racing scenes actually take place in Bayview), the setting of NFS:UG. He then receives a racing challenge from a rather ominous figure who offers him a place in his crew, but “won’t take ‘no’ for an answer”. The player sets off, despite Samantha’s warnings, but is ambushed by a mysterious, rabid driver who destroys his Skyline.
He also has the keys to Rachel’s Nissan 350Z, which is waiting for him outside the airport
Fast forward to the present, where we see the player arriving in Bayview by plane, with a note from Samantha referring him to her friend Rachel (voiced by Brooke Burke), who will set him up there. The player is then given the opportunity to complete a few errands in the car before inevitably returning it to the parking lot, where Rachel lectures him for being late before allowing him to choose his first car. This one is free, as it was paid for by the player’s insurance on his destroyed Skyline. The player then embarks on a quest to become the best racer in Bayview and eventually defeat the man who sabotaged his car in the flashback, who turns out to be Caleb.

After winning numerous races, the player stumbles upon Caleb’s street racing team, The Wraiths. The player challenges them to a series of URL (Underground Racing League) races and eventually convinces Caleb’s second-in-command, Nikki, to join her team. Rachel tells the player that Caleb has been manipulating sponsorship deals throughout Bayview for his own benefit. After the player defeats The Wraiths, an enraged Caleb challenges the player to one final race in his customized Pontiac GTO.
