Codename 13, a 17-year-old assassin, is suspended for a sloppy mission in Japan. He meets 11-year-old Monji, who has lost his mother, and decides to save him. It’s a great action movie with some very graphic violence to go along with the well-orchestrated action scenes. And by graphic violence, I mean some standard action movie murders that reach a physical level of brutality. The story is simple enough: an elite assassin is suspended from active duty after a mission fails. He soon finds a new purpose in protecting/avenging a local child. The performances are good, there’s plenty of wild action, and the story is familiar but engaging. Unfortunately, it gets stuck in an extraneous subplot early in the third act, and said subplot includes the finale. The latest in the “What We Do in the Shadows” series; it’s one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres of the month. Check out our October schedule for more!
